Virtual Console No-Shows: Mega Man 64 (N64)

23. Mega Man 64 (N64, Capcom)

Brief Synopsis: A port of the PS1 Mega Man Legends, teenage digger Mega Man Volnutt explores the ruins of Kattelox Island to help support his family, all the while competing against the Bonne Family of pirates and the Reaverbots who protect the treasures underground.  A successful blend of Zelda-esque elements, 3D platforming, and the action aesthetics of Mega Man, it’s become a cult classic.

Why is it Missing?: With Mega Man Legends 3 Project in full swing, it would be expected that the original games might see a re-release.  According to MML3P producer Tatsuya Kitabayashi, Capcom is looking into getting PSN ports for Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 to come out for North America.  The killing blow for Wii owners comes from his next comment, where he states that Mega Man 64 would likely not be revived for the Virtual Console.  See Protodude’s Rockman Corner for the full story.

Other (Legal) Options: Mega Man Legends can be found on the PS1 and N64 (as Mega Man 64, natch) in North America (alas, we did not see the PSP port on our shores), so you’ll need those consoles (or a PS2 or backwards-compatible PS3) to experience it.  Apparently Capcom made a Windows version as well, but I know little to nothing about it.  If things pan out, PS3 and PSP owners will be able to download it and its sequel in the future, but that’s up in the air as of the writing of this article.
