Gaming TV From Yesteryear – Gamespot TV, CES 2001

Gaming TV From Yesteryear

This episode of Gamespot TV likely aired in January 2001, and it’s notable for several reasons.

First of all, this is the first episode available on YouTube to feature Adam Sessler’s new co-host Kate Botello. Kate was one of the original hosts of The Screen Savers, and she joined Adam for a while before leaving to pursue an acting career. Oh, and the guy that’s with her during the slot car segment is apparently her future husband.

Also, this episode was filmed at the GameWorks arcade in Las Vegas. The show would ultimately move away from its normal set in favor of broadcasting from arcades regularly before moving back to a set when it changed to X-Play.

Of course, the reason they’re at GameWorks is because they were covering the Consumer Electronics Show, which featured a lot of news about the Microsoft Xbox. The most ironic bit is a game called Malice, which was used to show off the console’s graphical capabilities. Ultimately, however, the game was never released for the Xbox, and instead came out for the PlayStation 2.

At this point, the Dreamcast was less than a month away from being officially discontinued. The episode reports on the rumor that Nintendo was in buyout negotiations with Sega. One has to wonder if Sega would be better off today if that had been true.

This episode also features reviews of NBA 2K1 for the Dreamcast and WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Roll for the PS1, as well as previews of Phantasy Star Online and Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast, and Gran Turismo 3 for the PS2.
