Virtual Console No-Shows: Trip World (Game Boy)

104. Trip World (Game Boy, Sunsoft)

Brief Synopsis – Sunsoft took a unique approach with Trip World’s platforming mechanics. Instead of the usual “everything can kill you!” style, cuddly protagonist Yacopu will find very little to threaten his quest of saving his planet from the thief of the powerful Maita Flower. There are few enemies to speak of (bosses, mainly), nothing save projectiles will hurt you, and most of the creatures want nothing more than to snuggle up with you. :p An interesting experiment, and from what I can gather, a neat little game. More info here.

Why is it Missing? - Well, it’s only missing in North America. Europe and Japan have had Trip World for months on end, and we’re still waiting to see what’s going on with it. It never came out here when it was originally released, mind, and we’ve yet to see any imports show up on the 3DS VC. Perhaps this would make a good introduction?

Other (Legal) Options – If you’ve got a Japanese or European Game Boy device, you can track down the GB game that way. I’ve heard the Japanese release is scarce, though. Or, alternatively, you could set a 3DS to be European or Japanese in terms of its server. There’s no easy way to get this game in America, alas.

  1. Wait, you can download Japanese VC games on 3DS? WHAT? SINCE WHEN? EXPLAIN.

    • Hi Alex,

From what I understand, when you buy a 3DS, you can set it to a particular region (U.S.A., Japan, etc.) and access that area’s eShop. I don’t have a 3DS, so I can’t vouch for it beyond hearsay, so I could be wrong. I suggest you do some research if you’re interested. :)
