Fan Art Friday/Gamer’s Playlist – Mega Man 25th Anniversary Special

gamersplaylist2012

We’re doing things a little differently this week. Yes, Mega Man made it into Fan Art Friday last week, but I realized after that post that it’s his anniversary, so I want to give him a more thorough shout out. So, two songs and two bits of art celebrating Mega Man’s 25th will be on tap for you today. To begin, let’s rock on with Technodrome‘s beautiful interpretation of the Mega Man 3 title.

While soaking in that jam, relish in spacecoyote‘s revisioning of the Mega Man universe. She’s quite talented; I featured one of her Metroid pieces last year. This piece made it into UDON’s Mega Man Tribute.

Now, let the waves of Eric’s Little Shack smack you around a little with their soaring Wave Man cover.

How I’ve always wanted to hear it. Once you’ve dried off, relish FlintofMother3‘s cute MM2 Wily homage. Flint is a NinDB regular, and another of his works made it into the Mega Man Tribute book, too! Congrats to you both for making it in!

Happy birthday, Mega Man!

Wildcat’s 100 Favorite Game Tunes (2012)

Last year, I put up 100 tracks from gaming that I absolutely loved. However, as the year has rolled by, I think that I’ve cooled off on some of those songs and fell in love with others I had omitted. With that in mind, I feel that it’s a good time to revisit that idea and update the list. This year’s edition will increase the Top choices to ten. I will continue to operate under the rules set last year by keeping the list diversified through not picking all of, say, Mega Man 3′s soundtrack. Only two tracks per game will be allowed. Youtube clips are provided so you can sample the music, however, I can not constantly update this page with new links as Youtube users or copyright owners shut clips down! I’ve done quite a few Song Highlights on these tunes if you’d like to dig through and read why I like some of these songs. Enjoy!

Wildcat’s Ten Favorite NES Games (Updated 8/22/2012)

Long ago I did a really big series on the NES, with four articles discussing a bunch of games I had played and some other thoughts. I did a Top 10 list that plucked quotes from other posts of mine, but I think it’s time to revamp that old list a bit (and revise the one I redid a year afterward a tad). So, here’s my favorites from the original NES!

Mega Man 3 (Capcom)

I consider Mega Man’s third title to be his finest (as well as the console’s!). The difficulty is perfect, the bosses break off from the molds the other games followed, and the music is just fantastic. More on my love for it here (and Tactics for it here).

Bionic Commando (Capcom)

I’ve grown to love Bionic Commando more and more over the years. It’s a game so brazen that it just screams out for it. Hitler + pseudo Nazis, no jumps, “damn” in a NES game, and incredible genre-bending gameplay? Well worth some time in my opinion.

Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo)

Up until New Super Mario Bros. Wii, 2D Mario didn’t get much better than this outing way back in 1990.  Great levels, awesome powers, and just overall a piece of brilliance.

Legend of Zelda (Nintendo)

I still find the NES original Zelda to be among the best in the series. It’s a little confusing and certainly isn’t as smooth as later games, but I find its design to be fairly tight despite that. It also has two quests, which is a great boon for those seeking the most for their money.

Kirby’s Adventure (Nintendo/HAL Labs)

Kirby gained his power stealing habit here, and HAL’s game is loaded with charm. It’s not hard, but not every game needs to be difficult to be enjoyable…and I enjoy this one a lot.

Contra (Konami)

The NES had a knack of improving arcade ports (see Bionic Commando), and Contra continues that trend with some great bosses and levels. Pure shooting glory.

Mega Man 2 (Capcom)

Mega Man 2 may not have wowed me as much as its later sequel, but it’s still a well made game that has many strengths. It is easily among the greatest games in Mega Man’s career.

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse (Konami)

Castlevania’s earliest days are best served by Dracula’s Curse. It’s got the richest adventure with multiple playable characters and the best overall balance of the three NES games. If you could pick only one NES ‘Vania, I’d recommend this one.

Batman (Sunsoft)

The best licensed game on the NES? After some deep reflection, I think so! Sunsoft’s Batman is a fantastic game that out-ninjas Ninja Gaiden in my book, and despite a bit of cheap enemy placement, it’s a great rush to play through. Great music, too!

StarTropics (Nintendo)

This Zelda-esque action-adventure is wonderful. I really wish it picked up more sequels than Zoda’s Revenge (which lost a lot of what made this so cool). It’s kooky, but lots of fun…if you can deal with the clunky controls, that is.

Contenders:

Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo)

Ducktales (Capcom)

Castlevania (Konami)

Balloon Fight (Nintendo)

Wrecking Crew (Nintendo)

Wildcat’s 100 Favorite Game Tunes (2011)

Kurt Kalata over at Hardcore Gaming 101 is running a poll to determine what video gaming tunage is most liked among the forum and blog there, and I decided to participate and compile my favorites.  I’ve done quite a few Song Highlights on these tunes, and will be doing plenty more in the near future spotlighting them and providing some explanation, but here’s my list (with Youtube links to sample the song – hopefully they all work!):

Artistic Discussion – The Good and Bad of Gaming Box Art: 8/31/2011

Good: Metroid II: Return of Samus (Game Boy, Nintendo)

A bold, centralized shot of Samus in her new Varia Suit upgrade, with her Arm Cannon smoking as a seemingly tranquil (hint = it’s not – her Arm Cannon is smoking!) space canyon backs her – this established Samus Aran’s awesome new style, and also made her the prime focus, unlike Metroid’s NES box of sprite love.  The reflection in her visor is a nice touch, too.  A classic.

Bad – Mega Man 2 (NES, Capcom)

Well, it was bound to happen.  With Mega Man’s first outing in the WTF hall of fame, I couldn’t ignore the sequel’s attempts to outdo it.  Mega Man himself looks a little more competent, but as I mentioned in the Cultural Anxiety piece, I just can’t stop loving Mega Man’s diligence to continue fighting with a broken ankle.  He’s a trooper!  And, again stealing from before, why is Dr. Light helping Pirate…I mean Clash Man, sorry, that visor shine looks like an eyepatch – blankly stare out into nowhere?  Dr. Wily’s the villain, guys!  Quick Man looks anything but quick – his color scheme is all wrong, and his awkward pose is like, “I’ll be back, Mega Fool – I left my Hot Pockets in the lava!”  Clash Man’s colors are all wrong, too – apparently there was an overabundance of purple at the artist’s studio and a surprising lack of red, which is what they both should be. :p

I could keep going…but eh.  I’ve ripped it twice now – I’m content.

Cultural Anxiety – Mega Man/Rockman (NES/Famicom)

NES/Famicom

Study 17 –Mega Man/Rockman 1 -3 (Capcom)

Capcom’s premiere NES franchise had the most entries of any NES hero or heroine (barring Mario, whose menagerie of appearances is impossible to beat) with six in total.  The games all revolved around Mega Man/Rockman’s (American/Japanese) talent for stealing his adversary’s powers for his own use, a clever mechanic.  For this article, we’ll focus on the first three games, as they show the most significant localization changes.

In Japan, the first game wasn’t viewed as a success, but Capcom allowed its staff to work on a sequel during their spare time, as Capcom had plenty of other projects for that team to work on.  However, upon completion Rockman 2 became a smash hit all over the world, standing as the best-selling title for the franchise to date, with 1.5 million copies sold.  The third title was created under extreme pressure due to time constraints and a new supervisor overseeing the project, yet somehow came together incredibly well despite these difficulties.

Rockman’s box arts were all done by Keiji Inafune, a recent hire during the early stages of Rockman’s first game.  He was tasked with designing some of the enemies and Robot Masters.  While he is not the creator of the franchise (as some have mistakenly surmised), he had probably done more for it than anyone else at Capcom during his tenure there.  Fantastic insights can be found in Mega Man Official Complete Works, available from UDON.  The North American and European boxes were designed and executed quite differently from Inafune’s attempts, as we shall see.  We’ll go in this order for the boxes – Japan, North America, and Europe.

Mega Man/Rockman

Rockman’s first cover isn’t bad – definitely not Inafune’s finest work, but the game showcases the six Robot Masters and Rockman pretty well, and even teases Dr. Wily’s Castle back there, too.  It’s leagues ahead of what American audiences had to suffer:

Arguably the ugliest box art ever made, I’ve ripped it plenty in an Artistic Discussion bit a while back, and I don’t think I can top that…so I’ll quote it here:

There’s so many things wrong here that it’s hard even to begin.  Mega Man’s pose is awkward in multiple ways – his legs jut out at odd angles, his shoulders are too far forward, his left arm is holding the gun unrealistically, his helmet is off-center, his right arm is not drawn to scale, his boots look like they were merely colored over his original legs…etc.  The background fails perspective 101 practically everywhere, with only the explosives resembling anything that looks like…what it should be, I suppose.  The random palm trees that abruptly cut off, the bizarre domes that are in the foreground that seem to serve no purpose other than adding some buttcrack peaches into the mix, and god, I could keep going.  When the best part of your box is the nifty 80′s grid BEHIND your composition, there’s a problem!

The European box somehow straddles the line between Japan and America’s boxes, with generally better artwork more in line with Capcom’s designs, yet making it more Western in execution…and having the artist be somewhat more competent than whoever Capcom USA hired to do their box.  They even got Mega Man’s jumping face pretty accurate.

Mega Man 2/Rockman 2 Dr. Wily no Nazo

Inafune shows much improvement with the Rockman 2 box, although Rock does look like he’s about to punch out Woodman’s eye, there.  I like the enemy selection surrounding the central boss/Rock grouping a lot.  Nice layout.

Mega Man 2 looks better than the first box, but there’s still a lot of problems.  Dr. Light shouldn’t be giving Crash Man orders, for one.  Crash Man and Quick Man’s colors are all wrong…and Crash Man looks like he’s got an eye patch, making him a pirate well before Pirate Man was invented for Mega Man & Bass.  That stage is a mishmash of concepts, yet none of them are all that good (and why do you need a ladder to crawl out of the LAVA?), and then there’s Mega Man himself, who A) has a gun when he should have a Mega Buster), B) Doesn’t have a visor, C) and if he did have a visor, wouldn’t he have it DOWN in a firefight?, and D) My god, his right ankle’s broken!

Europe’s box takes its own unique path, and while it takes more liberties than its predecessor did, it’s not a bad effort by any means.  Although Mega Man is left handed, not right. :p

Mega Man 3/Rockman 3 Dr. Wily no Saigo!?

Rockman 3′s puts Rush front and center with Rock, and isn’t quite as nicely designed as the last – Inafune’s increased workload probably had a lot to do with that.

FINALLY, a box that isn’t atrocious.  It’s not ideal or great, but it’s at least somewhat representative of the franchise at last.  Spark Man and Top Man are the wrong colors, and Rush looks more like Top Man’s pet than Rock’s, but on the whole this is a vast improvement.

The European equivalent is probably the worst of its three, although it tries to mimic Inafune’s style but with more metallic paint and the menacing Wily in the back, obviously the best part of the whole thing.  Protoman also looks…wonky.  Not all that good.

While Inafune’s artwork has a certain cutesy anime flair to it, American and European gamers wouldn’t be able to tell that these games were Japanese save for the game itself, which did little to the sprites or code to hide things.  Still, Japanese title screens did feature some differences that Capcom USA altered for unknown reasons – let’s take a look.

Japan’s Rockman on the left, America’s Mega Man on the right (which will be the standard the rest of the way down).  Rockman’s is a vibrant blue, with a nice enlarged Rockman dead center bordered by a striking line and a classy logo.  Mega Man strips out all of the blue and Rockman for a more subdued, bold title, with its imposing logo and little else to distinguish it.

These two are almost identical, but Mega Man 2 had its building lowered to make room for the larger logo.  Capcom’s copyright is also missing, and the NA version has difficulty options.

In localization fun, Clash Man was Crash Man in Japan, due to the L/R confusion.

Rockman 3 has Rockman to the right of the options, a little more grown up than he was in Rockman, but Mega Man 3 axes him out completely for more black.  He’s in the game for the “You Got ‘Weapon’” screens, but the American title seems much more barren without him.

Also, the game’s menus read the game’s appropriate title – Rockman III for Japan, Mega Man III for America.

Next time, we’ll take a look at Mega Man 4 – 6.

Gamer’s Playlist: OC Remix Spotlight – McVaffe’s “Fear of the Flava” and Level99′s “Coiled Copper Wire”

It’s been a little while since I’ve done some remix highlighting, so here’s a couple of awesome tunes from Overclocked I’ve been digging lately.

Fear of the Flava (Angel’s Fear and Into the Thick of It, originally composed by Hiroki Kikuta for Secret of Mana for the Super NES by Square, remixed by McVaffe)

I adore this remix – it may be one of my absolute favorites of all game remixing. McVaffe blends two extraordinary themes together for a brilliant combo of excellence.  Its only downfall is its abrupt conclusion, but the melodic ride to that point is wonderful.

Coiled Copper Wire (Metal Man’s Theme, originally composed by Manami Matsumae, Takashi Tateishi, and Yoshihiro Sakaguchi for Mega Man 2 for the NES by Capcom, remixed by Level 99)

A very quaint take on a classic Mega Man theme, this acoustic playing of Metal Man’s theme is beautifully played by Level99.  Mega Man metal is awesome sauce, of course, but I found that this is perhaps the best rendition of this song I’ve heard.  Well done!
It’s nice to hear someone take their own unique spin on common themes at times

Wildcat’s NES Memories – His Favorites and his Reflections

Other Memories of the NES:

Part IIPart IIIPart IV

The Nintendo Entertainment System has been around for 25 years now, and it’s the one system I’ve arguably spent more time attached to in my entire life.  I had a NES since I was 3 or so, and happily own the same console I received back on Christmas those many years ago.  In celebration of such a great piece of hardware, I’m going to shine the spotlight on the console.  I will post excerpts of my earlier comments on my 10 favorite NES games of all time, as well as dig into the many happy moments spent on the machine, with the multitude of games that I have fond memories of.  I hope you enjoy my recollections of what could very well be the most vital system in my gaming career.

Wildcat’s Top 10 NES Games

1. Mega Man 3 (Capcom)
Mega Man 3 was my game when I was a kid.  It was my first Mega Man game, and it left an incredible impact upon me.  I spent a lot of time with MM3…the music remains some of my favorite in gaming ever (particularly Protoman’s whistle), the level designs are mapped into my brain, and the challenge level was perfect.  I was blown away and fell in love, and it arguably became my source of fandom for Capcom games.  I can easily say that I know MM3.  Just a well-designed classic that I love to play.”

2. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo)
“With eight huge, diverse worlds to wander through, Super Mario 3 was a treasure trove to gamers.  Its power-ups, enemies and gameplay improvements were remarkable, and the overall game felt polished and perfect.  Any 2D Mario has had to fight off comparisons to this giant of gaming, but it’s a reputation that has been well earned.  It’s my second favorite in the series, and is a heap of fun.  That’s all I could hope for.”

3. The Legend of Zelda (Nintendo)
“The Legend of Zelda is to this day one of my favorite gaming experiences.  The incredibly huge world for its time was perfectly sized, packed with so many tricks and hidden passages that a plucky gamer could spend hours randomly bombing walls, flaming bushes, or pushing rocks to uncover them all…if they had the right tools to do such a thing, that is…This is exactly what games are supposed to do – leave an intangible mark upon you.  And this concept, born from Shigeru Miyamoto’s early childhood wandering the Japanese countryside, has done it again and again to countless gamers across the world.”

4. Bionic Commando (Capcom)
“Bionic Commando remains unique with its inability to jump – it takes time and patience to master swinging the bionic arm to traverse the game’s levels, but once you get familiar with the concept, the reward is fantastic.  It’s certainly one of the finest executions of a different style of platforming I’ve come across in my years as a gamer…Its gameplay takes some adjustment, but it, hopefully, will suddenly click and become one of your favorite NES games like it did with me.”

5. Kirby’s Adventure (Nintendo/HAL Labs)
“Kirby’s NES-based sequel revolutionized the gameplay of the series forever – by giving Kirby the ability to absorb his enemy’s powers, the core of the franchise would never be the same as its more sterile predecessor…I really became attached to Kirby’s NES debut…It’s certainly not a difficult game…but that was irreverent.  When a game does everything you tell it to do with its controls, charms you with sharp graphics and delightful music, and offers up challenge not with its enemies or bosses but with some tricky hidden switches to find…this was a hell of a way to send off the NES.”

6. Contra (Konami)
“Contra’s successful NES port epitomizes the run-n-gun genre: tense gameplay balancing between shooting and platforming.  With…quirky alien bosses, an array of weaponry to collect, a high challenge level, and a solid two-player mode, Contra is a frantic delight.”
“…this arcade port maximized the awesome gameplay, music and level designs of the original, making it one of the finest action games on the NES.”*

7. Mega Man 2 (Capcom)
It’s very easy to see why MM2 has become the stalwart of the franchise.  The leap from the original to MM2 is vast.  The gameplay is tighter, the levels are crazier-looking…the music is rocking, and the whole experience feels far more focused.  The enemies are more diverse than MM1, and tend to be more fun to engage, too.  All and all, a lovely action game that pushes several of the right buttons for me.”

8. Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse (Konami)
“As I dive more and more into this game, I find myself believing that this is definitely one of Konami’s greatest. Reverting back to the original CV’s formula after Simon’s Quest, Dracula’s Curse builds heavily upon that foundation, showcasing improved level design, introducing multiple characters to play as, tweaking the difficulty to be just right, and features some incredible music. A hearty recommendation.”

9. Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo)
“I’ve played it many times since my first experience with it back in 1987, but it remains a fantastic testament to the power of gaming.  It’s a beautifully designed game, with tons of secrets, varying foes to figure out how to best conquer, and some of the tightest, most responsive controls of the era.  It was a landmark to end all landmarks.  Not many games would be able to replicate the joys of Super Mario Bros. in the early goings of the console, and it exceeds the majority of the games the system saw throughout its life.  The melodies that Koji Kondo created have enshrined themselves into memory, being able to be summoned in a hum instantly.  The graphics, while rudimentary now, were lengths ahead of many of the games I had played before it.  And the challenge level was just about perfect.  Super Mario Bros. isn’t a cakewalk – it requires dedication, practice and some perseverance to achieve the game’s final moments.  It’s totally worth it, though.”

10. StarTropics (Nintendo)
“…this game is a lot of fun. It’s puzzling, has interesting monsters, excellent music and a decent plot for the NES era. It’s a hard game, and the controls are stiff, but it manages to still remain enjoyable. A great choice.”
“Set in a fictional chain of islands, players take control of Mike Jones, who in the hunt to find his missing uncle uncovers an alien invasion plot.  With a few nods to Zelda, as well as staking out many of its own gameplay concepts, this action-adventure title remains one of Nintendo’s more unique titles.”*

Now that we’ve covered what I consider to be the absolutes of the console, I want to look back at several other games and other aspects of the NES, some notable, others not so much, and share with you many moments and highlights of my gaming adolescence (and, occasionally, my gaming maturity, since I still play games for it!).  Click through for these!

Gamer’s Playlist – Dwelling of Duels Combo #2: Sixto Sound’s “Dokuta Wairi, Rival to the Light” and Zoola/Ergosonic’s “You Can Call Me Roy G. Biv”

It’s been some time since I’ve done a proper DoD posting, and since the site’s back up and running, it’s ideal to do such a post now!

Mega Man 2 – Dokuta Wairi, Rival to the Light (Dr. Wily’s Theme), originally composed by Ogeretsu Kun, Manami Ietel & Yuukichan’s Papa, remixed by Sixto Sounds for Dwelling of Duels

Kirby’s Adventure – You Can Call Me Roy G. Biv (Grape Gardens Theme), originally composed by Hirokazu Andō and Jun Ishikawa, remixed by Zoola and ergosonic for Dwelling of Duels

Song Highlights: Mario Kart 64, Mega Man 2, Body Harvest, Muramasa: The Demon Blade

I’ve been in a game music mood lately (which ought to be obvious, given the amount of said posts these last few weeks), so here’s more excellent songs from gaming’s pantheon.

Mario Kart 64 – Credits (Kenta Nagata, N64, Nintendo)

I think the Nintendo 64 and Mario credit music were made to compliment each other.  I love this song.  It’s a delightful romp, one that is a fitting conclusion to the tense racing action you just faced (and conquered, with any luck!).  Well done, Nagata-san.

Mega Man 2 – Wood Man (Ogeretsu Kun, Manami Ietel & Yoshihiro Sakaguchi [Yuukichan's Papa], NES, Capcom)

Mega Man 2 had to be included on here at some point, and my first pick from this extraordinary soundtrack is the theme of Wood Man.  It’s got such a unique, odd opening to it that any cover I’ve heard has not managed to recapture it just right.  The remainder of the track, a fast-paced, wild-sounding track, is a perfect fit for the forest beasts Mega Man has to square off with.

Body Harvest – Inside* (Stuart Ross and Allan Walker, N64, DMA Design)

The entire Body Harvest soundtrack is melancholy, but this one particular piano piece has always stood out as a fabulously eerie song.  It captures a tenseness that the hero must feel, despite the temporary respite of being indoors.  The alien menace that is surrounding him may not be able to attack Adam (the protagonist) inside, but the music reminds the player that they still are out there, waiting for him to return to their battlegrounds.  A fantastic aria.

* = I don’t have track names for this soundtrack, so I’m naming it for where it was used.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade – Seifu Meigetsu A (Noriyuki Kamikura, Wii, Vanillaware/Marvelous)

This is one of the first field themes you hear in Muramasa, and it proved to be one of the best.  It’s got an excellent rhythm to it that perfectly suits the wanderings of your avatar, and also works in a lot of interesting instrumentation that ties into the Japanese culture and history it’s drawing from.  A solid track indeed.
